17-Year-Old Fatally Struck by Tree in Fierce Storm Tragedy

BONNER COUNTY, Idaho — In a tragic incident on Wednesday evening, 17-year-old Charlie Miller was fatally injured when a tree fell on him during high wind advisories. He was promptly transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane but unfortunately did not survive the subsequent surgery.

Miller, a 12th grader at Lake Pend Oreille High School, was well-known and cherished within his small school community. Following the news of his passing, the school’s superintendent arranged for crisis counselors to assist students grappling with the loss.

“Charlie was an amazing kid — always super kind and super friendly. He will be greatly missed,” shared Casey McLaughlin, director of Secondary Education for the Lake Pend Oreille School District. McLaughlin recalled knowing Miller since his elementary school days.

The tight-knit community at Lake Pend Oreille High School, which serves approximately 90 students, has been shaken by Miller’s death. Principal Luke Childers praised the staff for their dedication in supporting students during this difficult time. Many students returned home to be with their families upon learning the news.

Miller was the youngest in his family, with three older brothers who had already graduated from Lake Pend Oreille High School. He was described by teachers as a joyful presence, and there was anticipation for his graduation at the end of the academic year.
