Pima Butte Teacher Gives Back: Empowering Underprivileged Students in the Philippines

A dedicated teacher at Pima Butte Elementary School is making a significant impact on impoverished Filipino students through her annual backpack drive. Marie Lee, who has been organizing this initiative for five years, felt compelled to give back to her native country after experiencing poverty firsthand during her childhood in the Philippines.
“Growing up in the Philippines, I was surrounded by poverty,” Lee reflected. “As a child, I waited in line for donations, feeling uplifted that others cared for us. I always hoped to give back someday.”
After relocating to the United States, she launched the drive in Nashville. Lee reached out to friends and family to gather supplies for her former elementary school. The response exceeded her expectations. In its inaugural year, the initiative provided backpacks and supplies to 150 students. Since then, the numbers have soared, benefiting over 340 students annually, along with donations for teachers and classroom resources.
The need remains significant. Many classrooms lack modern teaching tools, relying on chalkboards and personal funds for supplementary materials. Last year, Lee’s donations even included a television for a teacher, who described the gift as life-changing.
Lee is planning a trip to the Philippines during her fall break. “I can’t wait to see the impact in person and to thank the teachers who work tirelessly to distribute the donations,” she shared.
Her vision extends beyond mere donations. Lee hopes to inspire Filipino children to break free from the cycle of poverty. “I want them to understand that education can lead to better opportunities,” she stated. “It’s amazing to see some of the recipients now being the children of my childhood friends.”
As her drive continues, Lee is accepting donations through her Venmo and PayPal accounts, ensuring that funds go directly to the cause.
