Little Knights Preschool preps for second year of childhood cancer fundraiser

Little Knights Preschool is once again participating in the Great Cycle Challenge, a national initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. This event will take place in Havasu on Friday, uniting students and staff in a common cause.

Last fall, the preschool organized young riders to cycle around Lake Havasu High School, raising nearly $700 in their inaugural effort. Preschool Director Marie Hendry expressed pride in this year’s turnout, anticipating participation from 36 preschoolers and 100 high school students, divided into two riding sessions.

The morning ride begins at 9 a.m., followed by an afternoon session at 12:30 p.m. Each group will navigate the hallways on strider bikes and tricycles, fostering camaraderie among the students. Last year, high school participants joined in to support their younger peers, reinforcing a sense of community.

Hendry, who has been biking for four years, underscored the deep personal significance of the event. This challenge not only raises funds but also honors the memory of Ryett Káne-Hekili, a former student who lost his battle with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of nine. His mother, Lia VanCleave, will attend Friday’s event, further underscoring the importance of community involvement in combating childhood cancer.

“I have worked with young children for over 20 years,” Hendry stated, reflecting on the losses she has faced. “I pray that none of the Little Knights experience the tragedy of childhood cancer.” The event serves as a poignant reminder of how such initiatives can foster support and connection in the community.
