Laughlin: Over 55,000 affected in Riverside Resort & Casino data breach

LAUGHLIN — The Riverside Resort & Casino has disclosed a significant data breach impacting around 55,155 individuals. This incident, which occurred earlier this year, was reported on September 5.

Information from law firm Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker, LLP reveals that the breach happened on July 25. Importantly, it was detected on the same day, prompting immediate action from the casino.

Matthew Laughlin, the Assistant General Manager, indicated in a notification letter that the casino engaged forensic cybersecurity specialists to conduct a thorough investigation. The inquiry revealed that an unauthorized third party might have accessed sensitive files during the breach.

Names and Social Security numbers of individuals were potentially compromised, leading the casino to send out notification letters last week to those who may have been affected.

To assist impacted individuals, Riverside is providing a year of free credit monitoring and fraud assistance. “Data security is one of our highest priorities,” Laughlin stated. “We moved quickly to investigate upon detection of the incident.”

The breach’s reach extends beyond Nevada; individuals from several states have been identified as potentially affected. Notably, this includes 1,359 residents from Texas, along with individuals from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Riverside has reported that there has been no evidence of “any actual or attempted misuse” of the compromised personal information, as indicated in its communication with the New Hampshire Department of Justice.

Those who think they may be affected are advised to monitor their credit reports for any unusual activity and to notify their financial institutions. Details for accessing the complimentary credit monitoring services are included in the notification letters sent out.
