Pavin Smith homers in first 3 at-bats, has 8 RBIs in Diamondbacks' 12-6 win over Astros

The Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak with a commanding 12-6 victory over the Houston Astros, bolstered by Pavin Smith’s historic performance.

In a remarkable outing, Smith homered in his first three at-bats, marking his first multi-home run game. He finished with a career-high eight RBIs, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive onslaught.

Smith joined Eugenio Suárez as the second Diamondback this season to hit three home runs in a game, trailing only J.D. Martinez, who holds the franchise record with four home runs in a single game.

“It was a great day for Pavin,” remarked Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, highlighting Smith’s readiness to perform despite limited recent play. “Pavin can hit. We always feel comfortable with his at-bats.”

In detail, Smith’s scoring included a three-run blast in the second inning, followed by a grand slam in the third, and capped off by a solo homer in the fifth. The Arizona bats showcased remarkable depth, as Smith fell just short of the club record for RBIs in a game.

With this win, Arizona (now within a half-game of the San Diego Padres) solidified its position in the National League playoff race, while the Astros maintained a comfortable lead in the AL West.

Smith’s offensive surge was echoed by Astros pitcher Justin Verlander’s struggles. Verlander permitted eight runs over three innings, marking a rare outing without a strikeout.

“Felt better, physically,” Verlander commented postgame. “They had a really good game plan… so tip your cap.”

In addition to Smith’s stellar performance, Suárez contributed four hits, including his 26th home run of the season, further amplifying the Diamondbacks’ offensive might.

The Astros expressed concern over the absence of infielder Mauricio Dubón, who missed his second consecutive game due to a thumb injury but was seen taking swings in preparation for a return.

Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks are set to face the Texas Rangers in their next game, with RHP Zac Gallen expected to take the mound against Nathan Eovaldi. Meanwhile, the Astros will host the Oakland Athletics, led by Spencer Arrighetti.
