5 Key Takeaways from Last Night’s City Council Meeting
An exterior view of Maricopa’s city hall was captured on April 2, 2024. In case you missed it, the latest city council meeting presented several significant updates.
The council unanimously approved liquor licenses for Brooklyn Boys Pizzeria and Asian Seoul’s Copa Kitchen. Brooklyn Boys, now under new ownership, secured an interim permit for its location at 20800 N. John Wayne Pkwy, while Copa Kitchen, situated nearby at 20924 N. John Wayne Pkwy, obtained its first liquor license without revealing any changes to its drink menu.
Additionally, Maricopa’s Moose organization is set to introduce bingo nights, following the approval of its bingo license by the council for its lodge at 40521 W. Magnolia Rd. Bingo will be hosted on Thursday nights, though a start date has yet to be announced.
In other developments, final plats for Apex Motor Sports and the second phase of Anderson Farms were approved. Apex, a private car club, will expand with nine new parcels for garage condominiums and additional commercial buildings, alongside plans for a future clubhouse. Meanwhile, Anderson Farms will subdivide around 50 acres into 372 residential lots ranging from 740 to 1,450 square feet, a plan discussed earlier this year.
Moreover, the city enacted Ordinance 24-12, following Arizona’s House Bill 2325, which establishes new parameters for backyard chicken ownership. Councilmember Eric Goettl raised concerns over the initial requirement for enclosures to be set 20 feet from neighboring properties, suggesting it would limit chicken keeping in many homes with narrow lots. The council responded by reducing the requirement to 10 feet.
Lastly, the council approved a rezoning request for a new sports field house located at Bowlin Road and Greythorn Drive, adjacent to Copper Sky. The rezoning aligns the property with city zoning codes, facilitating its future development as an extension of the Copper Sky facility.
