Somebody has won the $478M Powerball jackpot

The Powerball jackpot has officially been claimed, with a ticket sold in Georgia winning the impressive $478 million prize following Wednesday’s drawing. This marks the first jackpot win since August, bringing excitement back to players. The cash value of this jackpot is over $230 million.

Additionally, two lucky tickets—one from Pennsylvania and another from Texas—matched all five white ball numbers, earning their holders $1 million each.

Following this substantial win, the Powerball jackpot has reset to $20 million, with a cash option of $9.6 million. This amount will continue to grow until the next winner is found.

The winning numbers for the drawing held on October 23 were 2, 15, 27, 29, 39, and Powerball 20. Winners of the jackpot have the choice of receiving the full amount over a span of 30 years or selecting a smaller cash payout, which is the more common choice among winners.

The impact of taxes is significant even for those who opt for the cash payout, as federal taxes will reduce the total winnings. State taxes may also apply, varying by location. Powerball is available to players in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The odds of winning the jackpot remain daunting, set at one in 292.2 million. The next Powerball drawing is scheduled for 10:59 p.m. Eastern every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, with tickets priced at $2 each.

Historically, the largest Powerball jackpots have reached astonishing figures. The record stands at $2.04 billion, won on November 7, 2022, in California.
