In a competitive NCAA soccer landscape, BYU has consistently proven to be a formidable force. Last season, their journey ended just short of the championship, thwarted by an impressive Stanford team. However, the Cougars faced a challenging season this year, culminating in a tough match against the Arizona Wildcats at Mulcahy Stadium on Friday night, where they fell 2-1.
Despite BYU’s strong performance earlier in the season, featuring victories over ASU, Utah, and Iowa State, they could not secure a win against Arizona. The Wildcats took the early lead with a remarkable goal from freshman Narissa Fults, who drove into BYU’s territory and scored in the 13th minute. This goal marked Fults’s debut tally as a Wildcat.
BYU struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, despite creating danger in front of Arizona’s goal. A pivotal moment came in the 20th minute when BYU’s Lucy Kester found herself in a crowded box but couldn’t convert the rebound. Arizona’s goalkeeper, Olivia Ramey, showcased her skills with a diving save during another threatening shot from BYU’s Caroline Stringer.
Entering the second half, Arizona wasted no time extending their lead. Just a minute in, Sami Baytosh headed the ball into the net from a well-placed assist by Gianna Christensen, pushing Arizona ahead 2-0. While the traditional soccer wisdom suggests that a two-goal lead can be precarious, Arizona appeared well-prepared to defend it.
The Wildcats remained aggressive, seeking a third goal and earning several corner kicks. However, BYU persisted and found a glimmer of hope in the 71st minute when Erin Bailey, newly on the field, scored for the Cougars. This prompted a brief team huddle for Arizona as they aimed to refocus after conceding the goal.
Following the goal, Ramey emphasized the importance of maintaining composure. “We knew we still had the lead and just had to keep pushing through,” she reflected. Ramey’s performance was crucial, highlighted by her eight saves throughout the match, proving vital in sustaining Arizona’s lead.
Head Coach Becca Moros praised Ramey’s leadership. “Goalkeepers and center backs are critical in organizing and directing the team,” Moros stated, pointing to Ramey’s ability to facilitate communication on the field. Despite BYU’s high pressing style, Arizona managed to withstand the pressure and secure the win.
The Wildcats now look toward their upcoming match against the University of Central Florida, scheduled for Thursday in Orlando, followed by a home game against Kansas on October 17. With this brief respite, they aim to build on their recent success and maintain their competitive momentum.
