12-year-old girl hit by mother's car while getting dropped off at school, FHP says

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — A 12-year-old girl suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a children’s hospital after being struck by her mother’s vehicle on Monday morning. The incident occurred during drop-off near Booker Middle School as students returned to school across Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the girl’s mother, 30, had stopped her SUV around 7:45 a.m. to let her daughter exit the vehicle. After getting out, the 12-year-old dropped several markers and pens under the car.

As she bent down to retrieve her supplies, the mother inadvertently moved the vehicle forward, resulting in the tragic accident. Emergency responders transported the girl to All Children’s Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The FHP is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
