1-year-old found unresponsive in bathtub in west Phoenix expected to survive, authorities say

PHOENIX — A 1-year-old child was found unconscious and not breathing in a bathtub on Wednesday afternoon, prompting immediate emergency response from the Phoenix Fire Department. First responders were alerted to the incident in a neighborhood near Indian School Road and 51st Avenue, where crews discovered the child unresponsive.

Authorities reported that CPR was administered upon their arrival. The child was subsequently transported to a local hospital in “extremely critical condition.” Fortunately, officials later confirmed the child is expected to survive.

The Phoenix Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. In light of this unfortunate event, drowning prevention awareness is crucial, especially considering that drowning remains a leading cause of death for young children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that approximately three children die daily due to drowning-related incidents. To safeguard children around water, it is important to implement several precautions.

One key measure is to ensure that all caregivers are knowledgeable in life-saving skills, including basic swimming techniques and CPR. This knowledge can be lifesaving in emergencies.

Installing a four-sided isolation fence with self-closing and self-latching gates around backyard pools is also vital. Such barriers can help prevent children from accessing swimming areas without supervision.

Life jackets are essential when children are near or in natural bodies of water and should also be used by less experienced swimmers in pools. This added layer of safety can significantly reduce risks.

Moreover, constant supervision is necessary when children are near water, including bathtubs. Caregivers must maintain focus and avoid distractions, as drowning can occur rapidly and silently.
