Yarnell Residents Given Green Light to Return Home After Evacuations
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has issued an evacuation order due to a fire located near Yarnell. The blaze, known as the Crest Way Fire, ignited south of State Route 89A close to Crest and Happy ways.
As flames posed a threat, residents found themselves startled into action. Alexandra Howe, a local resident, described the moment she realized something was wrong. “I heard a loud bang and then my power went out,” she recounted, adding, “I saw the fire chief racing up the hill.”
Families hurried to ensure their pets and possessions were safe. Schoolchildren were sent home early as the urgency escalated. Howe’s child expressed concern, stating, “I was scared because I worried about my mom and if our house was burned down.”
Among those forced to evacuate was Alice Hicks. She recounted the rush to collect valuables—a quick process marked by urgency and anxiety. “We hurried up and got all of our valuable stuff. He packed his truck, I packed my car, and off we went,” she said.
Fortunately, firefighters managed to control the situation rapidly despite strong winds. The blaze moved up the mountain, sparing nearby homes. “We watched it go up the hill, but it was pretty much under control,” Hicks noted, relieved by the lack of reported damage and the swift lifting of evacuation orders a few hours later.
This incident serves as a reminder of the wildfire risks the community faces, particularly after experiencing the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013, which claimed 19 firefighters’ lives. Residents expressed gratitude for the efficient response. “They really do a good job. They try their best and that’s all we could ask,” Hicks added.
The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
In a related note, residents in wildfire-prone areas are advised to prepare an emergency supplies kit. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) strongly recommends having essential items like water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, important documents, and clothing ready in a waterproof container.
A comprehensive emergency kit can play a vital role in ensuring safety during unexpected evacuations. For those affected by natural disasters, assistance is available through the American Red Cross at 1-800-842-7349.
