Are banks open on Inauguration Day?

SAN FRANCISCO — On Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, the United States will observe Inauguration Day alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Both are recognized federal holidays, leading to various closures across the nation.

Inauguration Day marks the moment when the president-elect and vice president-elect are sworn into office. This significant event occurs every four years, and this year coincides with the annual observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As a result of these overlapping holidays, many businesses and government offices will not operate as usual. Here’s what to expect on that day.

Banking Services: Most major banks will be closed due to the Federal Reserve’s designation of the day as a bank holiday. Institutions like US Bank, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo will not open their doors. However, customers can still manage transactions via online banking and ATMs.

Postal Services: All United States Post Offices will be closed, and there will be no mail delivery. While UPS will not operate, FedEx offices will remain open, though some services may encounter delays due to the holiday.

Government Offices: Federal offices, including federal courts, will shut down for the day. State and local government offices will also be closed, reflecting the observance of state holidays on Jan. 20. Residents should confirm local office hours, as some municipalities may have limited operations.

Stock Market: Consistent with existing practices, the New York Stock Exchange will take a holiday and will not conduct trading on Inauguration Day.

Retail Operations: Despite the federal holidays, many retailers will operate as usual. Major chains, including Walmart and Target, along with grocery stores such as Costco and Safeway, plan to remain open. Adjusted hours may apply, so shoppers should verify with local stores before heading out.

This year, with the addition of Juneteenth in 2021, there are a total of 11 paid federal holidays observed in the United States. On top of that, Inauguration Day stands as a special observance every four years.
