Vandalism Disrupts Communication Networks Amid Paris Olympics

Vandalism targeted France’s telecommunications lines following recent arson attacks on train networks, affecting fiber and phone lines across the country. These acts of destruction occurred just hours before the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris.
The French government has reported that these attacks resulted in disruption to services in several regions as France hosts events for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The precise extent and impact on Olympic activities remain unclear.
Marina Ferrari, Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, stated on X that the damage impacted fiber and phone lines from Sunday night to Monday. Paris 2024 Olympics organizers have not yet commented on the situation.
A police official confirmed that at least six administrative departments were affected, including Marseille, a key location for Olympic soccer and sailing events. Telecom operators Bouygues and Free acknowledged service disruptions, while SFR’s lines were also reported to be affected. Free’s parent company stated their teams are working to restore services.
A national investigation continues into the recent train sabotage, which disrupted travel for nearly a million passengers in France and neighboring countries. Although train services resumed by Monday, investigations are ongoing. An extreme-left activist was arrested at a rail facility in Seine-Maritime, but the Paris prosecutor’s office clarified it was unrelated to the previous arson attacks, and no arrests have been made in connection with the sabotage.
