Valley twins looking to take their talents to future Olympic Games

The 15-year-old Schwickert twins from Scottsdale are setting their sights on the Olympics with unwavering dedication to their respective sports.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Mik Schwickert and Mona Schwickert are tirelessly training, hoping to one day grace the Olympic stage. Both siblings have a profound love for the water, a passion that’s runs deep in their family.

Inspired by their older siblings, Mik and Mona embarked on their athletic journeys early on. Mona, who began artistic swimming at the age of four, dedicates three hours every day to practice. She enjoys the unique blend of discipline and creativity the sport offers.

“I like how you can swim to music and you can choreograph your own moves and make it your own,” Mona said.

Mik followed his older brother into the world of diving eight years ago. His coach, Josh Rusboldt of Clavadistas del Sol, has seen Mik’s growth and determination over the years.

“He’s been around a long time, and we’ve been all over the world together so far,” Rusboldt said. “It’s been fun; he’s a good diver.”

Their hard work has earned them national and international accolades. Despite their rigorous training schedules, Mik and Mona manage their academic responsibilities through ASU Prep Digital, which offers the flexibility they need.

“They have the entire semester mapped out,” Mik said. “I can pre-work on school tasks so I’m all caught up when I return from competitions.”

The twins are currently focusing on the Olympics, especially as USA Artistic Swimming competes for the first time since 2008.

“I know they’ve trained really hard to get there and I hope I can too,” Mona said.

As they continue to refine their skills in Scottsdale, both have ambitious plans for the future. Mik aims not only for the Olympics but also for diving at the collegiate level.

“Everyone’s goal is to get to the Olympics. Mine is too,” Mik said. “But diving for a good college team is also one of my top goals.”
