Trailblazing 2nd Grader Triumphs in Statewide Photo Contest
Maricopa second-grader Connor Steelman has been recognized as one of ten winners in the AZ529 “My Picture-Perfect Career” photo contest. This contest is part of an education savings plan initiative by the Arizona state government.
Steelman, a student at Leading Edge Academy, submitted a photo depicting his dream job as an astronaut. Among the winners were students from various public, charter, private, and homeschools across seven of Arizona’s 15 counties.
This week, during a ceremony at the state capitol, Steelman was honored by Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. He received $529 towards his AZ529 account and a certificate to celebrate his achievement.
“Our statewide photo contest has sparked conversations among Arizonans, inspiring students and families to explore and discuss their aspirations for the future,” said Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. “The winners honored today received $529 towards their future education. This empowers them to reach their career goals.”
The contest invited K-12 students across Arizona to submit photos representing their dream jobs. Participants had the freedom to capture selfies, pose for photos, include friends and family, or come up with their unique creative ideas.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan provides a tax-free method for setting aside money for educational pursuits, including college, vocational training, and trade school. Arizona residents can receive a state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account, with limits of up to $2,000 per individual or $4,000 for married couples filing jointly.
Funds in the AZ529 plan accumulate tax-free and can be used for various educational expenses. Beginning this year, beneficiaries can also roll over unused funds into a Roth IRA for retirement, without incurring income tax or tax penalties. Additionally, family and friends can contribute to a child’s AZ529 plan and benefit from the same tax advantages.
