Surge of Pastors Rally Against Arizona’s Abortion Access Act
By Daniel Stefanski |
A coalition of Arizona pastors is rallying against a proposed constitutional amendment that would permit abortion on demand throughout pregnancy. This month, Pastor Eric Jones of Evident Life Church in Gilbert announced that nearly 700 clergy members have signed the Declaration of Arizona Pastors in Defense of Voiceless Children and Vulnerable Women.
In a statement, Jones reflected on his motivation: “Last August, after hearing about the horrific ‘Arizona Abortion Access Act’ (now known as Prop 139), I felt the Lord calling me to act. This declaration, along with the growing coalition of Arizona pastors, is the result.”
The Declaration articulates a firm stance against abortion, asserting the value of every human life created in the image of God. It emphasizes that abortion is a grave issue that not only ends innocent lives but also jeopardizes women’s health. The document highlights the role of the church in supporting vulnerable women, stressing that this matter transcends political classification, resting instead on moral and biblical grounds.
Moreover, the declaration specifically urges Arizonans to refuse support for placing the ‘Arizona Abortion Access Act’ on the ballot and to vote against it, should it appear. The pastors cite biblical references to reinforce their message, aiming to mobilize public opinion against the proposed amendment.
A website dedicated to the declaration provides further details, explaining the broad implications of the amendment. It warns that the language of Prop 139 could lead to unrestricted abortion access up to birth, eliminate safety standards, and allow non-qualified individuals to perform abortions. The amendment could also inadvertently protect sex offenders and facilitate taxpayer-funded abortions while stripping away conscience protections for healthcare providers.
Arizona residents will have a chance to cast their votes regarding the future of the Abortion Access Act in the upcoming General Election in November.
