Sun Link Streetcar Marks a Decade: Celebrating 10 Years of Service
(City of Tucson/Submitted)
Since its launch on July 25, 2014, the Sun Link Streetcar has stood as a beacon of progress and connectivity within Tucson, linking key city destinations and spurring economic growth. Boasting a 3.9-mile route, it has served over nine million riders since its inception.
To commemorate this milestone, Tucson’s Mayor, Regina Romero, alongside the Tucson Department of Transportation, Sun Tran, and Sun Link, invites the community to a day of celebrations on Saturday, July 20, across the historic districts along the streetcar route.
The festivities commence at 8 a.m. with a press conference featuring remarks from Mayor Romero and other notable speakers.
From 9 to 11 a.m., attendees can gather at Eighth Street and Fourth Avenue for a morning brimming with music, giveaways, and activities. This community fair will include booths from Tucson, Pima County, and Ready, Set, Rec.
Between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., activities move to University Boulevard/Tyndall Avenue, featuring games, prizes, and discounts at Geronimo Plaza.
A special “Moana” story time occurs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the University of Arizona Student Union’s KIVA Room. Signage will direct attendees from Second Street/Highland Avenue to the venue.
The day’s celebrations extend into the evening at 7 p.m. with the Summer Night edition of the Desert Haze Vintage Market at Hotel Congress Plaza. Live performances by The Charities and The McCharmlys will entertain all ages for a $5 entry fee.
From 7 to 11 p.m., the Flow for the Soul Train: Streetcar Jubilee will take place at Mercado Annex. This event features DJs, local vendors, live music, and food trucks. Sun Link riders enjoy a 10% discount at select vendors. Admission is $10, supporting the All Souls Procession.
