Storms Ravage Phoenix: Roof Collapse at Commercial Building Leaves 1 Missing
Rescue operations are on hold due to the risk of further collapse in west Phoenix.
PHOENIX — Severe storms ravaged the Valley Wednesday night, causing significant structural damage to a commercial building in west Phoenix. According to the Phoenix Fire Department, both the roof and backside of the building have collapsed.
The incident has left one worker missing. Employees on-site disclosed this information to fire officials, who are refraining from entering the unstable structure.
“Our first concern is the safety of our firefighters. We do know that someone is inside so we are going to take our time,” said Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller to 12News on scene.
A search and rescue dog named Moxie was deployed in an attempt to locate the missing worker. “That dog will go inside and is trained to find people that are trapped but right now the possibility of the other three walls collapsing is our main concern,” Keller added.
12News journalists were moved away from the vicinity due to safety fears regarding the building’s potential collapse.
According to the National Weather Service, the storms that struck Phoenix brought winds reaching up to 70 mph.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
