State Rep and School Board President Caught in Scandalous Affair with Superintendent
A recent investigation has revealed an “inappropriate” physical relationship between Elda Luna-Nájera, the president of the Tolleson Union High School District’s governing board and a state representative, and the district’s superintendent, Jeremy Calles.
The findings were disclosed during a special board meeting on Monday evening. Luna-Nájera, a Democrat who was appointed to the state House of Representatives in February, previously succeeded former Rep. Leezah Sun after her resignation amidst controversies.
The investigation was initiated after Calles accused Luna-Nájera of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. He alleged that her attempts to remove him from his position stemmed from his rejection of her advances.
According to investigators, the relationship began consensually but was deemed inappropriate, particularly given the power dynamics involved. Vice President Kino Flores emphasized this concern in a statement, noting that Luna-Nájera’s role was markedly more troubling.
The investigation also indicated that Luna-Nájera persisted in pursuing a relationship with Calles, even after he sought to discourage her.
During the board meeting, the board voted to adopt the findings of the investigation, with Luna-Nájera abstaining from the vote. She expressed her intention to issue a statement refuting the allegations. The Arizona Republic reported on her comments made during the meeting.
Flores clarified in an August board meeting that there were never any serious discussions about terminating Calles’ position. However, he acknowledged that Luna-Nájera had considerable influence over board decisions due to her leadership role.
Plans for reorganizing the board will be on the agenda for their upcoming meeting, following a request from Flores. The meeting’s date was adjusted from Tuesday to Wednesday to accommodate this.
Additionally, Luna-Nájera is seeking re-election after recently winning her primary race in Legislative District 22, edging out her opponent, Betsy Munoz, by a narrow margin.
