Spinato’s takes ‘alla famiglia’ to heart

Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen, a beloved Valley establishment founded by Ken and Elaine Spinato 50 years ago, continues to thrive amid changing culinary landscapes. Their journey began humbly in Phoenix, where their first day’s earnings amounted to just 69 cents from an iced tea. What began as a modest venture has evolved into a well-known family-oriented pizzeria with six locations, recognized as the “Official Pizza” of the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and Arizona Cardinals.

From North Central Phoenix to Scottsdale, Tempe, Ahwatukee, and Gilbert, Spinato’s has maintained its presence across the Valley. Each location reflects a commitment to quality; as Anthony Spinato emphasizes, they ensure the same standards extend into stadiums where their pizzas are served. “If we can’t deliver our pizzas as we do in our restaurants, we wouldn’t do it,” he stated.

The pizzeria remains a family-run enterprise, now managed by the next generation. Anthony serves as president and CEO, while his wife Jaime manages the brand and community outreach. Their sister, Nicole Spinato-Kienlen, oversees office administration and food management, supported by her husband Chris Kienlen. This familial bond has sustained the establishment through decades.

Anthony reminisced about their plans for a refresh at the North Central location, aiming to enhance its traditional decor with vibrant colors while preserving distinctive elements like the custom wallpaper adorned with family memories. The menu, rooted in family recipes, also continues to evolve. Jaime’s culinary expertise shines with new creations, including the November special, the Rose au Gratin pizza, featuring an Alfredo base topped with sliced potatoes, ricotta, mozzarella, and aromatic herbs.

This innovative spirit extends to other new offerings, like the Red Zone pizza, in honor of the Arizona Cardinals, topped with roasted red pepper, Canadian bacon, and mozzarella. In addition to pizzas, the diverse menu includes sandwiches, calzones, and appetizers like meatballs and wings, culminating in delicious dessert options such as cannelloni.

Reflecting on the company’s humble beginnings, Anthony noted how his parents’ hard work and belief in their product laid the foundation for future success. With a focus on hospitality, Anthony recalls deep-seated family traditions that prioritize guest connections, from the welcoming hugs from his mother to the personalized service offered by the staff. Even as they closed their original location, the Spinatos retained their commitment to quality and community, paving the way for steady growth.

Future plans call for expansion into the West Valley, with new locations planned for Goodyear and potentially Surprise or Arrowhead, ensuring that the essence of “Alla Famiglia” remains a core principle at every venue. Spinato’s Pizzeria & Family Kitchen is committed to nurturing their legacy while continuing to serve families across Arizona.
