Simone Biles Takes the Stage: Tuesday’s Competition Schedule Revealed
Simone Biles dropped out of the women’s team final in Tokyo. Now she and Team USA are aiming for redemption and gold in Paris.
PARIS, France — Simone Biles returned to the Olympic stage on Sunday, poised for her first gold medal attempt in Paris on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, the most decorated gymnast globally, is widely considered the best in her sport. Her comeback follows her withdrawal from multiple events in Tokyo to prioritize her mental health and safety.
Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and 16-year-old newcomer Hezly Rivera led the qualification round with the highest team score.
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team will compete in the team final on Tuesday. Biles is confirmed to participate in all four events, even while dealing with a calf injury.
The women’s team final begins at 12:15 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, to be aired live on NBC and Peacock, and rebroadcast in Primetime.
Simone Biles and Suni Lee have qualified for the all-around final on Thursday.
Biles will compete in all individual apparatus finals except uneven bars.
The schedule is as follows:
The women’s team final: 12:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, July 30.
The women’s all-around final: 12:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 1. Representing the U.S. will be Biles and Tokyo all-around champion Suni Lee.
The women’s vault final: 10:20 a.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 3. U.S. representatives: Biles and Jade Carey.
Balance beam final: 6:36 a.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 5. Representing the U.S.: Biles and Suni Lee. Floor exercise final: 8:20 a.m. ET the same day. Representing the U.S.: Biles and Jordan Chiles.
During the last Olympics in Tokyo, Biles withdrew from several events due to “the twisties,” a condition where a gymnast loses spatial awareness during routines. This condition can lead to severe injuries if a movement is mistimed.
The U.S. women’s team, which finished second in Tokyo, now seeks gold in Paris.
Paris 2024 will be Simone Biles’ third Olympic appearance. She debuted in Rio, winning four gold medals and one bronze. In Tokyo, she earned silver in the team competition and bronze on the balance beam.
Olympic gymnastics include artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline.
Artistic gymnastics, the most familiar to fans, includes events like the floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, and balance beam for women. Men’s events include the pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, high bar, and floor exercise. Scoring is based on difficulty and execution.
Rhythmic gymnastics combines gymnastics and dance, featuring solo and team events where gymnasts use a ribbon, hoop, ball, and club. They are judged on difficulty, artistry, and execution.
Trampoline gymnastics debuted in the 2000 Sydney Games. In this event, gymnasts perform high-flying twists, bounces, and somersaults, scored on difficulty, execution, and airtime. Only individual competitions exist, with no team events.
