Simone Biles’ Next Competition: When to Watch the Gymnastics Phenomenon
Simone Biles, the world’s most decorated gymnast, marked her comeback at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, setting her sights on gold. After withdrawing from multiple events in Tokyo to safeguard her mental health, Biles now faces a pivotal moment to secure victory on Tuesday.
Despite a calf injury, Biles, along with teammates Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and newcomer Hezly Rivera, secured the highest team score during the qualifiers. She is set to compete in all four events of the team final.
The competition will commence at 12:15 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, shown live on NBC and Peacock. Additionally, Biles and Lee have qualified for the all-around final on Thursday, with Biles also advancing to individual apparatus finals, barring the uneven bars.
Team USA, seeking redemption after placing second in Tokyo, aims for gold in the women’s team final. This year’s appearance is Biles’ third Olympic stint, having won four golds and a bronze in Rio and securing a silver and bronze in Tokyo.
Gymnastics at the Paris Olympics features artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline disciplines. Artistic gymnastics includes floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, and balance beam for women; men compete in events such as pommel horse, rings, and high bar. Rhythmic gymnastics involves solo and team routines with apparatus like a ribbon or hoop. Trampoline, introduced in 2000, showcases athletes performing aerial tricks judged on difficulty and execution.
The women’s vault final begins at 10:20 a.m. ET on Saturday, August 3, featuring Biles and Carey. The balance beam final is scheduled for 6:36 a.m. ET, followed by the floor exercise final at 8:20 a.m. ET on Monday, August 5, with Biles competing in both events.
During the Tokyo Olympics, Biles dealt with the “twisties,” a condition causing loss of spatial orientation, leading her to withdraw from several events to avoid potential injury. Now, with a strong start in Paris, Biles and her team strive to achieve their gold medal aspirations.
