Seniors in Arizona play a significant role in elections, wielding considerable influence over outcomes. As the 2024 election approaches, candidates must prioritize issues that resonate with this vital voting demographic.

Historically, Arizona’s seniors have demonstrated strong electoral participation. During the 2020 presidential election and the 2022 midterms, nearly 80% of voters over 65 cast their ballots, placing the state fourth nationally for senior voter turnout.

With pivotal races inching toward close finishes, the concerns of older voters are front and center. Key issues include community safety, accessible aging options, and the management of rising prescription drug prices. Affordable health care access is increasingly essential for this demographic as they advance in age.

Across Arizona, many seniors struggle to afford essential medications and services. Programs like Medicare Advantage offer support, providing comprehensive care and capped out-of-pocket expenses. However, recent cuts proposed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) threaten the stability of this critical program, raising alarms among seniors who rely on it for protection and peace of mind.

Changes to Medicare Advantage could impact over 33 million Americans, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, especially in rural areas. These individuals depend on the coordinated care that this program provides. Concerns over cuts translate into fears of fewer choices, increased costs, and reduced access to preferred health providers, creating anxiety not just for seniors but also for younger generations worried about their loved ones’ financial and health security amidst inflation.

As the stakes rise, older voters and their families are closely observing candidates committed to safeguarding their health care. Historically, seniors have outperformed younger voters in turnout rates, as seen in the 2018 and 2022 elections. Their participation could once again be crucial in determining the outcomes of the 2024 elections.

Dr. Heather Ross, a nurse practitioner and ASU professor, emphasizes the importance of understanding seniors’ needs. Previously serving as political director for the Arizona Nurses Association, she highlights that the voices of seniors must remain a priority for political candidates.
