Romero Fire burns 7,000 acres southwest of Kearny, 'SET' status lifted for residents

The Romero Fire, burning since July 19, is being vigorously battled by fire crews 13 miles southwest of Kearny and 14 miles west of Dudleyville.

As of July 22, the fire has grown to 7,000 acres and is 40% contained, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (AZDFFM).

Fire officials have stated that crews are patrolling the southern end of the blaze to address lingering pockets of heat. Residents of 3C Ranch have returned to a “READY” status.

Freeman Road is closed, and deputies are manning roadblocks around the fire area, urging the public to stay clear, including Barkerville and Willow Springs Road. Additionally, the Arizona Trail segment between Oracle and Kearny is closed.

On Saturday, air tankers made multiple retardant drops, working against time as storm cells with wind gusts up to 50 mph threatened to exacerbate the situation.

AZDFFM reiterated that wildfires are “no drone” zones during aerial suppression efforts, warning that drones could ground firefighting aircraft.

Despite the fire’s advance, no communities are currently under “GO” or “READY” evacuation orders. However, 3C Ranch residents remain in “SET” status, prepared to evacuate if the situation worsens.

Evacuation lists, center information, and up-to-date road closures are available via the Arizona Emergency Information Network.

Officials have yet to release any information on available shelters for potential evacuees.

Residents in wildfire-prone areas are encouraged to prepare emergency supply kits. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests storing essentials such as water, food, medications, and important documents in a portable, easily accessible container.

For a comprehensive checklist of necessary supplies, refer to the NFPA’s guidelines.
