Rodent Invasion: Protect Your Valley Car from Costly Damage!

Mechanics are seeing more and more rodent damage in Valley cars. Here's what to do if a rodent moves into your car.

PHOENIX — Residents in the Valley are confronting a burgeoning issue: rodents nesting in their vehicles. Reports from local experts indicate a significant rise in automobile damage caused by these pests.

Matt Allen, owner of Virginia Auto Service, reports numerous vehicles entering his shop with evidence of rodent activity. “Cars provide a cozy and safe nesting environment,” he explains, highlighting the appealing mix of warmth and food remnants often found within.

Common discoveries include chewed wires, droppings, and even dead rodents. Allen notes the problem isn’t confined to specific areas of Phoenix, affecting all neighborhoods equally. “It doesn’t matter if you drive a Toyota or a luxury sports car,” he stated. “Rodents merely see a vehicle as another potential home.”

To avoid costly repairs—sometimes amounting to thousands of dollars—Allen suggests performing regular checks under the hood. Signs to look for include tiny footprints, debris, and dark, rice-like droppings.

Meanwhile, Jo Martin from Arizona Pest Solutions advises identifying the type of rodents involved before taking action. He emphasizes the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with particular species like pack rats.

Effective deterrents include flickering solar-powered lights. “These can be strategically placed around the engine at night,” Martin suggests, noting their success in repelling intruders. Additionally, he recommends circulating air by keeping the hood open periodically and using peppermint oil strategically to discourage rodent presence.

Maintaining cleanliness around properties is vital. “A tidy yard offers less opportunity for nesting materials,” Martin adds, emphasizing that prevention is better than remediation.

If methods fail, both experts recommend contacting a professional pest control service. With increasing incidents of rodent-related vehicle damage, vigilance is essential for motorists across Arizona.
