Rock Out: Local Love Promotions highlights bands through Punk Fest

Local Love Promotions is set to invigorate the Tucson music scene with their upcoming Punk Fest event slated for Friday, July 19 at 191 Toole.

The lineup boasts an eclectic mix, including Something Like Appropriate, Bleach Party USA, Gutter Town, Manslaw, the Besmirchers, Planet Strict 9 (PS9), and Midnight Island.

The Besmirchers, a four-piece ‘80s gutter punk band, are known for their aggressive, confrontational performances. Fronted by local punk rock legend Lenny Mental, the group has released multiple records and often incorporates dancers into their live shows.

Gutter Town, a three-piece group, recently unveiled a video for their song “Take Your Time.”

Midnight Island, formed in 2018, released their album “Since You Asked” late last year, featuring tracks like “Mr. Man” and “Not Every Story (has a happy ending).”

Bleach Party USA, established in 2016, is recognized for their unique “surficidal” punk rock sound. Their recent release, “Scorpion Tacos,” hit the shelves in January.

Something Like Appropriate, who released the EP “Pink Anxiety” two years ago, are in the midst of recording new music. Their sound blends upbeat tempos with serious themes.

Local Love, under the stewardship of Brent Kort, regularly hosts events at notable venues such as the Rialto Theatre and 191 Toole. With over 11 years of experience, Kort aims to spotlight local talent.

Kort describes Punk Fest as a familial gathering. “It becomes a big punk family affair,” he commented. “You wouldn’t think it, but at Punk Fest, there’s so much love thrown around in a room.”

Besides managing R Bar and holding roles at the Rialto and 191 Toole, Kort is a versatile musician with ties to several bands, including Funky Bonz, Saguaroville, and Dust.

His extensive musical background, which includes stints with Hillbilly Bo and Ramonz, inspired him to create Local Love shows. He expressed a desire to treat bands respectfully, having experienced varying levels of treatment himself.

Kort emphasizes showcasing bands at different career stages. “Either I know them, or I know them from other bands,” he explained. His experience in managing and booking has stemmed from years in the music scene, allowing him to connect with diverse groups.

Regularly, Kort discovers new talent. “There’s new bands being brought to my attention every day,” he disclosed. These new bands often either open or close shows to gauge their drawing power.

Events like Punk Fest serve as networking platforms for bands and fans alike. “It helps when you bring other people’s crowds,” Kort said, noting the potential for bands to collaborate and gain new followers.

Kort often organizes genre-specific or concept-themed shows, ranging from metal to hip hop nights. He acknowledges the significance of venues like 191 Toole and the Rialto for participating bands.

“Especially with the Rialto, it’s a stage that all of their favorite bands have played on,” Kort noted, highlighting the venue’s sentimental value.
