Republican Lawmakers Taking Action on Practical Solutions for Constituents
By Daniel Stefanski |
As Arizona prepares for its upcoming legislative session, Republican lawmakers are focusing on practical solutions to address constituent concerns. A notable development is the introduction of HB 2009 by State Representative Pamela Carter, which aims to amend existing statutes affecting service members.
Clay Robinson shared his experience on X regarding a frustrating discovery while seeking tax waivers for military service members. He highlighted that those who have already paid the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) vehicle license tax cannot receive a refund for the current year, although they can utilize the exemption upon their return. Robinson expressed understandable irritation with this policy.
Recognizing the potential for legislative change, Robinson reached out to state officials to propose a straightforward remedy: allowing tax refunds and establishing a 30-day period before mobilization to claim tax exemptions with valid orders. His initiative gained traction, with Representatives Matthew Gress, John Gillette, and Rachel Jones showing support for the bill.
Gress responded positively, praising Robinson’s efforts and underscoring the essence of representative government. He stated, “Thanks for bringing this idea to us, Clay Robinson. This is what representative government looks like!”
Robinson encouraged fellow Arizonans to voice their opinions and suggestions, emphasizing the power of individual input in the legislative process. “You DO have a voice in your government. You CAN change the law,” he stated passionately. He believes that HB 2009, while a minor adjustment, will significantly benefit service members of the Arizona National Guard during deployments, streamlining access to financial assistance.
The 57th Legislature’s First Regular Session is fast approaching, with Republicans occupying a stronger position in both the House and Senate compared to previous years. However, they will navigate a divided government, facing challenges with Democrat Katie Hobbs in the Governor’s Office.
