Raging Sand Stone Fire Scorches 13,000 Acres Near Fountain Hills, 'SET' Alert Issued for Sunflower
RIO VERDE, Ariz. — Fire crews are currently battling the Sand Stone Fire, which ignited on July 25 and is burning 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills. As of Monday, the blaze has consumed 13,667 acres and remains 0% contained, according to authorities.
A closure order has been issued for the Tonto National Forest due to the “uncontrolled” fire. The Cave Creek and Mesa Ranger District offices are enforcing this Emergency Closure Order to ensure the public’s health and safety while crews work on firefighting operations.
The fire has forced a closure on the southbound lanes of State Route 87, also known as the Beeline Highway, from State Route 188 to Bush Highway. The Arizona Department of Transportation announced no estimated time for reopening the roadway.
The Sunflower area is now under a “SET” evacuation status, urging residents to be ready to evacuate if necessary. This status highlights the importance of being prepared for potential evacuation as conditions can change rapidly.
Officials have attributed the fire’s origin to a lightning strike last Thursday night. Although the fire is highly visible from nearby communities, there is currently no imminent threat to Rio Verde, Fort McDowell, and Fountain Hills. Approximately 200 personnel have been deployed to combat the fire.
For real-time information on road conditions, residents can use the AZ511 app. However, officials have not yet provided information on shelters available for evacuated residents.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) strongly urges residents in wildfire-prone areas to have an emergency supply kit prepared. Essential items include three gallons of water per person, a three-day supply of ready-to-eat food, a first-aid kit, prescription medications, and important family documents stored in a waterproof container. Additional recommended items include a sleeping bag, battery-powered radio, dust mask, matches in a waterproof container, and sturdy clothing.
