Black Fire burning in Tonto National Forest

The fire south of Roosevelt Lake has burned approximately 11,162 acres and is 51% contained.

PHOENIX — Fire crews are tackling the Black Fire in the Tonto National Forest, which has burned 11,162 acres and is currently 51% contained. The fire did not expand on Friday, and crews increased containment by 6%.

Lightning is suspected to have ignited the fire. It is located near Lakeview Estates, Tonto National Monument, and Black Brush Ranch. These areas, south of Roosevelt Lake and west of Apache Lake, are not under immediate threat, according to Tonto National Forest officials.

In total, 404 personnel are fighting the Black Fire, utilizing 11 crews, 13 fire engines, 2 helicopters, 2 bulldozers, and 3 water tenders. Firefighters have made significant progress reinforcing containment lines from Forest Road 341 to Black Brush Ranch.

Efforts include patrolling, mopping up hotspots, and rehabilitating areas impacted by suppression activities. Light smoke may still be visible as the fire continues to smolder within its perimeter.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution on surrounding roads due to the movement of firefighting personnel and equipment. The Tonto National Forest has implemented a closure order for parts of the Tonto Basin, Globe, and Mesa Ranger Districts. This order restricts road usage and access within the closure area and is set to remain until September 1, unless rescinded earlier.

The Roosevelt Post Office services have been temporarily moved to Tonto Basin Post Office. Public health and safety concerns prompted these measures, officials announced.

The Central West Zone Type 3 Incident Command Team has managed the fire since July 14. For information, the public can call (928) 295-1514. Aerial resources are actively dropping water and retardant to control the fire’s spread. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the County Emergency Notification System for evacuation updates.

The fire has prompted “READY” evacuation status for several communities, including all USFS campgrounds north of Highway 188, Black Brush Ranch, and the Roosevelt Lake Marina and RV Park. The Tonto National Forest supports firefighting efforts by keeping Grapevine Campground and Frazier Horse Campground closed. However, Tonto National Monument will reopen on July 24 at 8 a.m.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management remind residents to remain prepared for emergencies year-round. Additionally, the public can seek assistance from the American Red Cross by calling 1-800-842-7349.
