Police Stop Reveals Cocaine in Havasu Man’s Possession, Prosecutors Opt Not to Charge
A California man was arrested earlier this month after being stopped for speeding near Tradewind Drive and McCulloch Boulevard in Lake Havasu City. Police reported that the driver, identified as 40-year-old Mark J. Sexton of Lancaster, exhibited signs of intoxication and was found with a plastic bag containing cocaine.
On September 4, Mohave County prosecutors decided not to file charges against Sexton, citing reasons such as insufficient evidence and the need for further investigation. Delays in prosecution may also pertain to pending toxicology results.
The arrest occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on September 1, when officers noted Sexton driving at a speed of 50 mph in a 35 mph zone. An ignition interlock device in his vehicle reportedly indicated a potential alcohol presence.
When approached, Sexton admitted to consuming alcohol that day but claimed he didn’t feel intoxicated. However, he struggled to complete field sobriety tests, leading to his arrest on suspicion of DUI.
During a search of his vehicle, law enforcement discovered a small plastic bag containing suspected cocaine, though the exact amount was not specified in the report. After his arrest, Sexton consented to a blood test for toxicology analysis.
Sexton faces felony charges for DUI, possession of narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia. As of Wednesday, he was released from custody.
