Phoenix police officer dies days after suspect charged with shooting 2 officers

PHOENIX — Tragedy struck the Phoenix Police Department as Officer Zane Coolidge succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting earlier this week. The incident occurred while he responded to reports of a break-in, marking a somber moment for the community and law enforcement.

Coolidge, a dedicated five-year veteran, passed away Friday evening in the hospital, where he had been in critical condition since the Tuesday encounter. “It is with a heavy heart and incredible sadness that I let you know of the passing of Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge,” said Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan, emphasizing his commitment to service and the loss felt by his family and the department.

This year has seen a disturbing trend, with officers shot at 11 times in Phoenix alone, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement. In connection with the shooting, police have charged 41-year-old Saul Bal with attempted homicide and other felonies. As of now, there are no updates regarding additional charges or a scheduled court appearance for Bal.

Coolidge’s partner, Officer Matthew Haney, who also responded to the initial call, was wounded but has since been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home. Both officers were certified field training officers in the Mountain View Precinct, integral in preparing new recruits.

The shooting unfolded around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the officers pursued Bal on foot after arriving at the scene. During the altercation, Bal fired upon the officers, hitting both. While Coolidge was unable to return fire, Haney did manage to return shots, though the suspect was not hit. Authorities apprehended Bal shortly after.

As investigations continue, both the department and the community come to terms with this significant loss, honoring Officer Coolidge’s service and dedication to protecting others.
