1 Phoenix officer released from hospital after shooting, other remains in critical condition

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer shot in the line of duty on Tuesday night has been released from the hospital, according to the Phoenix Police Department, which also emphasized the officer and his family’s request for privacy during this time.

In stark contrast, the second officer involved remains in critical condition, creating deep concern within the community.

Both officers, who have served the department for five and two years respectively, are trained Field Training Officers at the Mountain View Precinct, dedicated to mentoring new graduates from the police academy.

The incident unfolded near McDowell Road and 16th Street when officers confronted Saul Bal, 41, following an attempted vehicle break-in. Bal allegedly opened fire, injuring both officers.

Law enforcement records reveal Bal has a significant criminal history, including drug-related offenses across several Arizona counties and charges for attempted burglary and disorderly conduct. In light of Tuesday’s events, he now faces two counts of attempted murder.

Bal had recently transitioned to community supervision after serving time, with his sentence scheduled to conclude just days before the shooting.

He is currently held on a $2 million cash-only bond, reflecting the serious nature of the allegations against him.

In a statement, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego expressed her support for the injured officers and their families, recognizing the risks inherent in police work and commending their courage. “Their service to our city comes with serious risk and sacrifice,” Gallego stated.

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly supportive. Blue ribbons now adorn poles around the hospital, signifying solidarity with the officers and their families.

Mountain View Precinct Commander Leif Myers acknowledged the continued support from the public and community partners, reinforcing the morale of the officers still on duty.

During the investigation, detectives located a firearm believed to have been used in the attack, adding to the evidence against Bal.

Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan urged the community to keep the injured officers and their families in their thoughts and prayers, expressing gratitude for the bravery displayed by the Phoenix Police Department.

In light of the situation, the Phoenix Police Foundation has established a donation page to support the affected officers, alongside the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association which is also raising funds for their assistance.
