Arizona’s Senate President Warren Petersen is preparing to seek reelection for his leadership position as the state gears up for the upcoming legislative session. With the Republican Party maintaining control of the chamber, Petersen aims to build on the momentum from previous sessions, which were marked by a divided government.

In an exclusive interview, Petersen emphasized his commitment to serving as a check against what he describes as “abuses of power and radical policies” from the Executive branch. He stated, “Our focus will be on commonsense solutions for pressing issues such as inflation, the border crisis, housing shortages, water security, and educational improvements for our children.”

Petersen’s leadership has earned him considerable support among Republican colleagues. Senator Wendy Rogers expressed her full endorsement, highlighting his principled approach and loyalty. “He stood by me when it mattered, and that goes a long way in our party,” she remarked. Rogers further noted that under Petersen’s guidance, the caucus has become more cohesive, successfully navigating various challenges together.

Senator T.J. Shope also voiced his support, describing Petersen as a fair leader who effectively manages the chamber. This backing reflects a broader consensus among Republicans regarding Petersen’s ability to lead in Arizona’s complex political landscape.

Over the past two years, Petersen has played a crucial role in Arizona’s divided government. He pressured Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs to compromise on budget priorities and thwarted several left-leaning proposals. His leadership has also been evident as the legislature engages in numerous legal matters, including lawsuits and amicus briefs, defending state laws that have faced challenges.

Petersen’s proactive stance on legal issues has positioned him as a potential candidate for state Attorney General, especially as political analysts begin considering the upcoming 2026 election cycle. The breadth of legal matters he has addressed showcases his experience and could make him a strong contender.

The election for Senate leadership will take place this Tuesday, setting the stage for what could be another pivotal session in Arizona politics.
