PCC Music Faculty and Students Dazzle in Electrifying Concert Series Showcase

PCC music faculty & students showcase work in concert series

Pima Community College’s Pima Arts is set to launch an exciting concert series featuring various ensembles from its music department. Performances will take place from Monday, December 2, to Tuesday, December 17, at the Proscenium Theatre and Recital Hall located at 2202 W. Anklam Rd. Tickets for the events are available for purchase.

The series kicks off with the Percussion Ensemble on December 2 at 7 p.m. Led by Trevor Barroero, Ph.D., the ensemble will perform a diverse program that includes innovative pieces like “Jingle, Jangle, Tangle,” created for 20 tambourines. Notably, the program will also feature three new marimba trios by composer Josh Gottry, whose works are inspired by the colors of Benjamin Moore paint, followed by a humorous concerto by Leroy Anderson.

Next, the Jazz Ensemble will take the stage on December 9 at 7 p.m., offering a selection of songs from iconic composers such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The evening will spotlight guest performers Oskar Anderson on trumpet and JJ Johnston on trombone, contributing to a night of rich jazz history.

The Concert Band will present its Fall Concert on December 10 at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Victor Valenzuela, the band will explore a range of musical styles, from contemporary compositions to timeless classics, highlighting the diversity of the concert repertoire.

A special event, “Musica Y Cultura,” is scheduled for December 13 at 7 p.m., featuring the renowned Mariachi Azteca de Pima College. Under the direction of Salvador Gallegos, attendees can expect a vibrant mix of traditional and modern mariachi music that showcases cultural heritage.

The orchestra will perform on December 14 at 3 p.m., conducted by Anne Grimes, Ph.D. The program will include beloved pieces from “The Lord of the Rings” and festive classics such as “Sleigh Ride.” Additionally, PCC faculty member Alex Tentser will present a solo performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #1, “1. Allegro con Brio.”

Later that evening, the Guitar Ensemble will showcase its talents at 7 p.m. Directed by Michael Lich, the ensemble will perform a mix of orchestral works as well as duos and trios, highlighting compositions from the Baroque era to contemporary pieces.

The series will conclude with a performance by the Chorale and College Singers on December 15 at 3 p.m. This concert will feature both the a cappella College Singers and the mixed chorus, demonstrating skills across various forms of choral music, including SSA chorus, spoken chorus, vocal sextets, and accompanied mixed chorus.

Finally, the Musical Theater Workshop will present its program on December 17 at 4 p.m. Participants will perform student-led numbers, directed by Kryste Andrews, providing a platform for showcasing their talents in musical theater.
