OPINION: My Vision for Our Schools – Why I Support Prop 488
Ben Owens, a parent and former member of the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board, is currently advocating for Proposition 488 as a school board candidate. His firsthand experience in managing the district’s growth provides a unique perspective on the challenges ahead.
Having served on the board during the construction of Desert Sunrise High School, Owens emphasizes the critical decisions that could arise if Proposition 488 fails. This measure aims to fund two new K-8 schools and expand existing high schools, addressing the needs of a rapidly growing student population.
More notably, Prop 488 seeks to enhance Career and Technical Education programs. According to Owens, these programs are essential for equipping students with practical skills necessary for post-graduation success. Importantly, he clarifies that this initiative does not propose a tax rate increase but rather requests community support to meet enrollment demands.
Owens warns that relying solely on School Facilities Division funding would lead to significant compromises. This state funding does not cover vital infrastructure needs such as technology improvements or essential facilities like cafeteria spaces. The lack of adequate funding could hinder the district’s ability to create modern, technology-driven learning environments.
Without the support of Prop 488, the district may struggle to provide the resources necessary for students to thrive. A vote in favor of this proposition signifies a commitment to ensuring that schools are prepared to face contemporary educational challenges.
As a candidate and advocate for Maricopa’s educational future, Owens urges the community to support Proposition 488, emphasizing the importance of forward momentum for local schools.
