New year, same matchup: Scottsdale Christian, Pima to square off with a state title on the line once again

MESA, Ariz. — Scottsdale Christian and Pima will meet again in the 2A state championship game after both teams secured victories in the semifinals on Saturday.

Last year, Scottsdale Christian claimed the title with a 41-24 win over Pima. With the stakes once again high, the Roughriders are seeking revenge. Pima, the No. 3 seed this season, edged out Tonopah Valley with a thrilling 40-34 victory in their semifinal matchup.

Tonopah Valley entered the game undefeated at 10-0 but could not withstand Pima’s offensive push. Conversely, Scottsdale Christian, the No. 12 seed, continued their surprising playoff run by defeating No. 1 seed San Tan Charter, 34-21. This victory not only highlights their resiliency but keeps their dream of back-to-back championships alive.

Next Saturday, Scottsdale Christian aims for its fourth state championship, having previously won titles in 1983, 1989, and last year’s 2A victory. This will mark the Eagles’ sixth appearance in a state championship game.

Pima, rich in history, is hunting for its 11th state title. The Roughriders have previously secured championships in several years, including 1961, 1969, and most recently in 2022. This championship match will be their 21st appearance in such a game, second only to Blue Ridge’s 25 titles in Arizona history.

In their series, Pima leads Scottsdale Christian 4-1. The upcoming 2A State Championship Game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale. Both teams are eager not only for a title but to solidify their positions in Arizona high school football history.
