Nelson Nearly Nails Triple-Double as Aztecs Surge Past Central Arizona with Impressive 21-9 Quarter
The Pima Community College women’s basketball team, currently boasting a record of 6-1, competed against Central Arizona College on Tuesday in Coolidge. The matchup marked a departure from their usual ACCAC Division II play.
Ranked No. 10 in the ACCAC Division II, the Aztecs triumphed over the Vaqueras from ACCAC Division I by a score of 76-58, achieving their fourth consecutive victory. A pivotal moment came in the third quarter when the Aztecs outscored their opponents 21-9, widening their lead to 54-40 after a tight first half, where they led 33-31.
Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer led the scoring for the Aztecs with 19 points, shooting 7 for 14 from the field. In addition to her scoring, she nearly secured a double-double with nine rebounds, alongside two assists, one steal, and one block. Freshman Melicia Nelson, also impressive, recorded 16 points along with 11 rebounds and seven assists, just missing a triple-double. She converted 2 of 3 shots from three-point range, showcasing her shooting accuracy.
Another contributor was freshman Kiley Sours-Miller, who achieved 12 points and fell just one rebound short of a double-double, adding nine rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Kennedi Niemann rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, complemented by three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, also making 2 of 3 from the arc. Sophomore Mattanaya Vital contributed eight points and three assists to the team’s efforts.
The Aztecs will return to action at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday, Dec. 4, hosting South Mountain Community College for another ACCAC conference matchup, with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
