Mohave County Airport Authority announces purchase of fixed base operations from Signature Aviation

BULLHEAD CITY — The Mohave County Airport Authority has officially secured a deal with Signature Aviation to acquire the fixed base operation (FBO) and commercial ground service at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport. This $1.4 million purchase will come into effect on September 30, marking a significant shift in airport operations.

James Scheller, the newly appointed Airport Director, expressed the importance of this transition. “All pricing, fuel sales, and customer service will now be managed entirely by the MCAA,” he stated, referring to the airport by its FAA identifier, IFP. FBOs play a crucial role in providing essential aviation services such as fuel, parking, and hangar facilities for general aviation.

Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, Signature Aviation is recognized as one of the largest networks of FBOs globally, boasting over 200 locations. It took ownership of the IFP FBO site in 2015 through its acquisition of Landmark Aviation’s services.

Scheller identified the need to revise the airport’s existing contract with Signature Aviation shortly after beginning his tenure in May 2023. This contract had initially been crafted for multiple previous FBOs. During discussions, Signature presented the opportunity for the airport to take over its operations. “It was a pleasant surprise, and I was more than prepared for this,” he reflected. This marked the first instance of Signature releasing an FBO to an airport.

The advantage of ownership will empower the airport to provide competitive incentives aimed at attracting more business. Scheller emphasized, “It’s an investment that will give back to the community and allow us to put our best foot forward.” Furthermore, the MCAA plans to retain Signature Aviation’s current staff as airport employees, ensuring continuity of service.

The intricate acquisition process spanned ten months, slightly delayed due to large-scale events like the Formula One race and the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, as well as the PGA Tour at the Scottsdale Stadium Course. These events significantly increased corporate traffic at IFP.

In terms of infrastructure, Scheller pointed out the capabilities the airport possesses, including a well-equipped runway, taxiway, and recent funding for taxiway rehabilitation, along with grants for an air traffic control tower and an automatic weather operating system. “We’re polishing the airport and preparing it,” he mentioned.

Next month, Scheller will participate in a conference called “Take Off,” aimed at connecting airports with airlines and related services. He expressed excitement for the event, where he will meet with various airlines and their marketing representatives to explore market development opportunities.

Doug Wilson, president and CEO of FBO Partners LLC, aided the MCAA in this acquisition process. Scheller concluded, “What the MCAA Board of Directors has done with this $1.4 million acquisition is a significant step forward for the community.”
