Michaels tops Check in cash

The 2024 primary election in Yavapai County is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30. As of July 19, candidates have disclosed their latest fundraising efforts. A significant focus has been on the Democratic primary for Yavapai County Supervisor District 3.

Incumbent Donna Michaels has accumulated $84,393 in funds and allocated $67,156 throughout this election cycle. Her opponent, Nikki Check, reported raising $45,031 and spending $38,557.

“I think it’s highly possible I won’t be the candidate that raises the most money,” Check remarked in a prior interview. “But one of the more beautiful things about elections is that dollars don’t always translate into votes. And I have a really solid campaign committee and campaign plan.”

The victor in the Democratic primary will contend with Republican Lori Drake in the November general election, who remains unchallenged within her party. Drake has raised $3,187 and spent $1,571.

Republicans dominate the other races, facing no Democratic opponents in the upcoming general election. In the race for county school superintendent, candidates Steve King and Kara Woods are vying to replace the current Superintendent Tim Carter. King has raised $25,760, spending $23,183, while Woods has brought in $12,026 and spent $12,014. Carter has promoted King’s campaign with a contribution of $960.60 and an endorsement, with an additional $1,000 support from the Mingus Mountain Republican Club.

For Yavapai County Attorney, incumbent Dennis McGrane has raised $140,036 and spent $132,907. His contender, David Stringer, is financing his campaign through personal loans, totaling expenses of $174,781.

Incumbent Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes has garnered $81,975 for his reelection campaign and expensed $60,957. His primary challenger, Douglas Eckenrod, has raised $6,314, spending $5,904.

In the race for Yavapai County District 2 Supervisor, James Gregory has raised $4,500 and allocated $1,410.65 toward his campaign. Meanwhile, his opponent, Wiley Cline, has self-financed his campaign, spending $6,599.71.
