Mica Mountain Thunderbolts win 4A high school football state championship

TEMPE, Ariz. — Mica Mountain Thunderbolts clinched the 4A state championship with a commanding 42-13 victory over the Arizona College Prep Knights at Tempe Mountain America Stadium on Friday night.

This triumph marks a significant milestone for both schools, which have quickly ascended in Arizona high school football. Arizona College Prep, with a season record of 12-1, began its varsity journey in 2017 and successfully advanced to the playoffs for only the fourth time. Notably, this marked the Knights’ first progression past the quarterfinals.

In contrast, Mica Mountain, boasting an undefeated record of 13-0, has established itself as a formidable opponent in just its second varsity season. After reaching the semifinals last year and falling to the eventual champion, Canyon Del Oro, the Thunderbolts have now secured their place at the top.

This championship game marked the inaugural matchup between Mica Mountain and Arizona College Prep, a notable addition to both teams’ histories, as noted by MaxPreps.

In addition to high school football, the Phoenix metropolitan area is a hub for various professional sports. Teams from major leagues include the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, and MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks. State Farm Stadium serves as the Cardinals’ home field, while the Suns and Mercury play at the Footprint Center, and the Arizona Rattlers compete at Desert Diamond Arena.

Phoenix also boasts a USL soccer team, Phoenix Rising FC, which plays at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium. The Valley hosts an impressive array of major sporting events annually, including college football’s Fiesta Bowl and Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the WM Phoenix Open on the PGA Tour, NASCAR events, and Cactus League Spring Training involving 15 MLB franchises.
