'There's more to this story': Loved ones want answers as Wickenburg PD investigates mother's death

WICKENBURG, Ariz. — A Wickenburg community is in shock after 39-year-old Alexandria Millard was found shot inside her home. Millard, a mother of two, was discovered on July 10, just weeks shy of her 40th birthday.

It was a harrowing scene in broad daylight when Millard was found by one of her children, who immediately alerted Millard’s boyfriend. He called 911. This sequence of events has left the community shaken and desperate for answers.

The Wickenburg Police Department is currently leading the investigation, collaborating with the Peoria Police Department Crime Scene Investigations team, the state crime lab, and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office. Despite extensive efforts, the mystery of what transpired remains unresolved.

Friends and family of Millard are grappling with the sudden and unexpected loss. “Every day when you wake up, you pray that you get answers,” said Stacie Cannard, Millard’s aunt and godmother. “And then you wake up and it’s real all over again. It’s just too much.”

Born in New Orleans, Millard moved to Arizona as a baby. She spent nearly five years working at Highgate Senior Living in Prescott, advancing from a server to a clinical assistant. Her colleagues remember her for her compassionate nature and unfailing dedication.

Highgate’s Executive Director Jennifer West reflected on Millard’s impact. “Alex was just very empathetic and took extra time with all of the residents. She was always the first to pick up shifts when we needed help,” she said.

Millard’s 40th birthday fell just days after her death. Her loved ones decided to honor her memory with a celebration that underscored the love and unity she brought to those around her. “She was just a beautiful person who loved life,” said Nicole Chavez, a close friend. “We felt like celebrating her was the right thing to do.”

The investigation continues. Authorities are awaiting results from the crime lab and medical examiner’s office. “They do not feel that it was suicide, so much so that they’re investigating and looking for other possibilities,” said Cannard.

To support Millard’s children and manage funeral costs, loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page. The grief-stricken community remains hopeful for justice and answers, believing that this tragic story is far from concluded.

“It just doesn’t make sense,” Chavez echoed. “We feel like there’s more to the story and we feel like some justice is due for Alex.”
