Kamala Gears Up: America Poised for Change
With few exceptions, the Democrats have unified behind President Biden. Despite his unsettling debate performance with Donald J. Trump last week, supporters are sticking with him, at least for now. However, the display left many Americans, including loyalists like myself, deeply concerned about Biden’s capacity to carry on.
Running for president is an exhaustive endeavor, and doing so while simultaneously fulfilling the duties of the office requires extraordinary stamina. Biden, at 81, faces immense physical and mental demands. It is clear why he believes his candidacy is a continuation of the 2020 battle for the “soul of America,” defending democracy against Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.
Yet, the time has come for Biden to step aside, making way for Vice President Kamala Harris. While she may face opposition from racists and skepticism from independents, Harris brings unique strengths. She embodies the experiences of over half the country’s voters as a woman and represents a progressive step forward in politics.
Biden has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, especially after the repeal of Roe v. Wade. However, he cannot entirely grasp the personal affront of being treated as a second-class citizen due to gender. Harris, on the other hand, is in a unique position to champion these issues with authenticity and fervor.
If Biden truly values integrity, he should endorse Harris for the party’s nomination. The repeal of Roe v. Wade represents more than just a restriction of reproductive rights; it is an erosion of women’s citizenship. No parliament would regulate men’s reproductive actions, yet women face strictures that remain unchallenged in male policy. Harris has a strong record of advocating for abortion rights, with widespread public approval supporting her stance.
Moreover, Harris is well-suited to confront Trump’s criminality amid his mounting legal troubles. Her experience as California’s attorney general and local prosecutor equips her to highlight the gravity of electing a twice-impeached, criminally convicted GOP standard-bearer.
Internationally, Harris has represented the administration effectively on issues such as the Ukraine war, migration, and climate change. Her appeal to young voters and voters of color, who have shown waning support for Biden, could reinvigorate the Democratic base. Her multicultural background as Black and Indian American resonates with diverse demographics, despite critiques of her law enforcement record.
Democratic insiders fret that Biden withdrawing could spark chaotic competition among possible successors. To mitigate this, Biden must immediately and resolutely support Harris. Her credentials as a trusted running mate and vice president justify her stepping into the presidential candidacy.
There will always be critics, but if Biden is indeed the man of principle he claims to be, he must endorse Harris and secure her path to the nomination.
