Hunt & Khalong Spark Pima’s 113-59 Triumph Over Phoenix with 35 Points Off the Bench
The Pima Community College men’s basketball team kicked off its ACCAC conference play with a commanding performance on Wednesday, continuing its impressive season with a clear victory at home. The No. 8-ranked Aztecs defeated Phoenix College 113-59, bringing their record to a perfect 6-0.
Initially, the game was tight, with the Aztecs leading 16-10 midway through the first half. Sophomore Kota Benson set the tone with a vital basket, and teammate Max Majerle followed up with a three-pointer, prompting an early timeout from the Bears. This offensive surge transitioned into a decisive 20-6 run, highlighted by freshman Mason Hunt’s scoring, extending the lead to 36-16 before halftime.
The second half saw the Aztecs maintaining momentum, starting with a 19-6 run in the first five minutes to establish a dominant 68-27 lead. The team continued to excel, outscoring Phoenix College 64-38 in the latter period.
Mason Hunt was particularly effective, scoring 17 of his 21 points in the first half alone, shooting 70% from the field while also contributing five rebounds and four steals. Majerle finished strong with 20 points on 58% shooting, alongside four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Freshman Khalon Johnson added significant support off the bench with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Wes Ball also made his mark, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds, while Gabe Oldham rounded out the scoring with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Additionally, Kota Benson contributed with eight points, five rebounds, and six assists.
The Aztecs are set to continue their season on Saturday, facing Chandler-Gilbert Community College in another ACCAC conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
