Hezbollah’s Leader Promises Retaliation Amid Rising Tensions with Israel Over Device Attacks
BEIRUT — Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has vowed to continue daily attacks on Israel, asserting that Israeli residents displaced from their homes near the Lebanon border will remain unable to return until hostilities in Gaza conclude.
His statement followed the bombings of Hezbollah’s communication devices—a significant setback, described by Nasrallah as a “severe blow.” Hezbollah retaliated during his speech, conducting strikes in northern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers earlier that day.
Tensions escalated as Israel reportedly targeted thousands of Hezbollah pagers and walkie-talkies, an assault widely attributed to Israeli forces. However, Israel has not publicly confirmed involvement. The two-day attacks heighten fears of escalating violence, following nearly a year of intermittent fighting along the border.
While Nasrallah addressed his followers, Israeli warplanes flew low over Beirut, disrupting daily life as they broke the sound barrier. Israel simultaneously launched its own strikes in southern Lebanon, targeting what it claimed were hundreds of rocket launchers and other military infrastructure.
In response to the precarious situation, the Israeli army has advised residents in parts of the Golan Heights and northern Israel to avoid public gatherings and seek shelter, anticipating potential rocket fire.
Israeli officials have issued stern warnings about a potential broader military operation against Hezbollah, emphasizing a commitment to restoring safety in border communities. The Israeli defense minister indicated that Hezbollah would pay a growing price for its actions, affirming that military operations would persist.
Tuesday and Wednesday’s bombings killed at least 37 people, including children, and left around 3,000 others injured. Nasrallah announced a probe into the attacks while criticizing the scale of destruction and accusing Israel of seeking mass casualties.
Hezbollah has linked its ongoing strikes to solidarity with Hamas, who initiated the current conflict with Israel following the October 7 attacks. This prolonged conflict has already resulted in significant casualties on both sides and the displacement of tens of thousands.
Israeli officials have signaled a shift in focus toward Hezbollah, with plans to bolster military presence along the Lebanese border. Amidst concerns over escalating tensions, Israel’s army chief indicated preparations for potential additional operations.
In Lebanon, the repercussions of the bombings are still unfolding. The Lebanese Army is actively seeking out and neutralizing suspicious communication devices, with authorities having restricted the carrying of such devices in airports for safety measures. The recent attacks have reportedly severely disrupted Hezbollah’s internal communication, complicating their operational capabilities.
As the conflict intensifies, the situation remains fluid, with both sides engaging in retaliatory strikes while civilians bear the brunt of the violence, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
