Havasu Heights man arrested in hit-and-run case

A man from Lake Havasu City is under investigation following a minor traffic incident on South Palo Verde Boulevard last month. Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as Robert L. McDonald, allegedly cut off another driver, leading to a collision. The incident escalated when McDonald promised to exchange contact information but instead fled the scene.

Officers spotted McDonald’s vehicle in a parking lot on Tuesday, but it was displaying a different license plate. The suspect denied any involvement in the accident during the encounter, raising further suspicions.

Witnesses reported that on August 23, McDonald, 53, appeared to follow a white van before the collision occurred. After the crash, he trailed the van into a nearby parking lot, where he confronted the driver.

According to police accounts, McDonald exited his vehicle and yelled at the other motorist until the victim approached him. Initially, McDonald committed to sharing his information but quickly got back into his vehicle and left.

Using the recorded license plate number provided by the victim, law enforcement linked McDonald to the incident, despite his attempts to evade contact. Officers contacted him by phone, only to find that the number was no longer in service.

On September 3, police officers recognized McDonald’s vehicle at a business on Lake Havasu Avenue. A VIN check confirmed that the vehicle was involved in the previous hit-and-run case.

As McDonald exited the establishment, his appearance matched the description given by the victim, prompting officers to follow him. He was stopped shortly after failing to signal while turning onto South Palo Verde Boulevard.

McDonald reportedly acknowledged the vehicle as his own but denied any involvement in the accident or interaction with the driver of the white van. He was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Lake Havasu City Police Department for booking on misdemeanor charges related to leaving the scene of an accident.
