Fifita throws 2 TDs and Arizona's defense stops No. 10 Utah on four 4th downs in 23-10 win

SALT LAKE CITY — In a stunning upset, Arizona defeated No. 10 Utah 23-10 on Saturday night, aided by a formidable defense and a standout performance by quarterback Noah Fifita. The Wildcats improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play, while Utah fell to 4-1 and 1-1 in the conference.

Arizona’s defense was particularly impressive, recording two interceptions, eight pass breakups, and seven tackles for loss. The Wildcats stopped Utah on four crucial fourth-down attempts, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.

Fifita passed for 197 yards and threw two touchdowns, including a pivotal 35-yard strike to Keyan Burnett, extending Arizona’s lead to 23-10 in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the game, he connected with Tetairoa McMillan on a 41-yard play that kept the momentum in Arizona’s favor.

Utah’s team struggled offensively, as junior quarterback Cam Rising remained sidelined, leaving freshman Isaac Wilson to lead the charge. Although Wilson could move the ball effectively, he experienced difficulties in the red zone, resulting in two interceptions and limited scoring opportunities.

After a tough first half, where Arizona led 10-3, the Wildcats capitalized on Utah’s defensive lapses and maintained pressure throughout the game. Tyler Loop’s record field goal and a series of well-executed plays contributed to Arizona’s success.

Despite a powerful first half from Utah, totaling 219 yards but only managing to score three points, the team failed to convert critical opportunities. Wilson had a career-high of 280 passing yards, yet the Utes left the field disappointed.

With this victory, Arizona’s historical road record against AP Top 10 teams improved to 6-31-1. Looking ahead, the Wildcats are set to host Texas Tech on October 5, while Utah will enjoy a bye week before facing Arizona State on October 11.

POLL IMPLICATIONS: The loss may drop Utah from the Top 10 rankings, while Arizona aims to enter the rankings following this significant win.

This game not only highlighted Arizona’s potent defense but also underscored Utah’s vulnerabilities. Fans eagerly anticipate the Wildcats’ next game as they continue their quest for recognition in college football.
