FC Tucson Triumphs Over Oakland’s 51O, Advances to National Semifinals
FC Tucson triumphed in the Western Conference final of USL League 2, held in Peoria, Ill., on Saturday.
Despite an early lead from Project 51O—thanks to midfielder Ali Elmasnaouy’s first-half goal—FC Tucson rallied in the second half. Key goals from Paul Caliari and João Neves drove their comeback.
The Arizona team drew on their experience and a few critical halftime adjustments to turn the match in their favor. “We did a couple of adjustments in the second half,” said coach Sebastian Pineda. “They went back in the second half and turned it around and we got the results we needed.”
With this win, FC Tucson advances to the league semifinal against Peoria City FC, set for Sunday. Peoria City earned their spot by defeating four-time league champions Flint City Bucks with a decisive goal from Heartland Division leader Luke Persenico.
While details of the final are pending the determination of the second finalist, sources within FC Tucson have expressed interest in hosting the event.
