Family drives 25 hours back to Phoenix after Crowdstrike tech outage delays their flight


Delta Airlines is still canceling flights after last week’s tech outage.

PHOENIX — Flight delays continue to impact Delta Airlines passengers across the world after last week’s tech outage.

On Friday, a faulty Crowdstrike security update caused computers running on Microsoft Windows to crash.

The outage disrupted businesses and organizations worldwide, including airlines.

According to aviation data provider Cirium, more than 5,000 Delta flights have been canceled since the tech outage happened.

Annette Banuelos said she and her family were in Minneapolis planning on boarding a flight back to Phoenix but noticed there were issues even before they got back to the airport.

“Our flight post changed twice before we got to the airport, first one was 9:53, second one was 10:55. Last time was 2:06 that we were supposed to leave the airport,” Banuelos said. “They let us know the flight was canceled once we got back up there.”

Banuelos said there were no responses regarding refunds or hotel compensations.

“There was a line [for the service desk] past the elevators, it was just a crazy amount of people there sleeping, stuck at the airport, frustrated, tired and there was just no answers,” Banuelos said.

Banuelos said like others, that her family left got a hotel and rented a car to drive the 25 hours back to Phoenix.

“We don’t know if we are going to get reimbursed for our hotel for our rental car, we don’t know what is going to happen,” Banuelos said.

Laurie Marlowe, another Delta Airlines passenger, said she went to Croatia with seven of her friends and had not seen her luggage in three days.

Marlow said she travels regularly and has never had issues in the past.

“Luckily I got my flight out on Saturday as I was supposed to,” Marlowe said. “One friend is stuck in Detroit right now, it’s taken her four days.”

Marlowe said her 18-hour flight turned into a 28-hour flight due to the complications brought on by the tech outage.

On Tuesday, Pete Buttigieg announced the Department of Transportation is launching an investigation into Delta Airlines after it did not recover as quickly as other airlines.

Buttigieg said DOT has received more than 3,000 complaints specific to Delta Airlines regarding this situation.
