Desert Cedars Gunman Tased After Standoff with Police
Maricopa Police Department has revealed new information regarding a shots fired incident that occurred Friday night in Desert Cedars, leading to the arrest of 53-year-old Michael A. Ramirez.
Ramirez faces charges for unlawfully discharging a firearm and two counts of disorderly conduct, according to the probable cause statement acquired by Arizonanews.org.
Officers responded to a residence in the 44500 block of West Windrose Drive at approximately 9 p.m. The call was made by Ramirez’s ex-girlfriend, who reported from a locked closet, fearing Ramirez had a gun and had fired several shots in the backyard.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around the home and instructed Ramirez to come outside. According to the report, Ramirez emerged with a semiautomatic pistol. Despite orders to drop the weapon, he initially pointed it towards the officers before eventually putting it down. He was then subdued with a taser.
Investigators found five spent .22-caliber shell casings on the property along with one live round in Ramirez’s pistol. Ramirez admitted to firing the weapon, claiming he believed he heard his deceased father instructing him to shoot into the air.
Witnesses, including Ramirez’s bedridden brother, confirmed that an argument had taken place between Ramirez and his ex-girlfriend just before the gunshots were heard. The ex-girlfriend fled to a closet for safety upon hearing the gunfire.
Following his arrest, Ramirez was taken to Pinal County Jail. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
