Democrats Showcase Unexpected Republican Backing for Harris’s Presidential Run

Former GOP Representative Liz Cheney will join Vice President Kamala Harris for a campaign event on Thursday in Ripon, Wisconsin, marking a significant moment in the battle for the presidency. This location is historically recognized as the birthplace of the Republican Party, setting a notable backdrop for the occasion.

As the November 5 election nears, Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, gathers momentum with endorsements from well-known Republicans. This support contrasts sharply with the campaign of her opponent, former President Donald Trump, who leads the Republican ticket. The event also aligns with the release of an open letter from a coalition of Wisconsin Republicans, who express their backing for Harris, stating, “Donald Trump does not align with Wisconsin values.”

The coalition includes a sitting GOP district attorney, former state lawmakers, and various constituents, all echoing the sentiment that their state’s political future hangs in the balance. “To ensure our democracy and our economy remain strong for another four years, we must elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House,” the letter emphasizes, presenting a clear choice in the upcoming election.

Wisconsin has proven to be a pivotal swing state in recent electoral cycles, flipping between Republican and Democratic candidates. Joe Biden narrowly secured victory there in 2020 after Trump won in 2016, underscoring the state’s unpredictability.

Cheney, who is known for her critical stance on Trump, publicly endorsed Harris last month, reinforcing her commitment to constitutional values amidst the political turmoil. “I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she stated, highlighting the perceived dangers of Trump’s candidacy.

The support for Harris has broadened, with over 230 former Bush, McCain, and Romney administration officials, along with more than 100 Republican national security professionals, lending their voices to her campaign. Meanwhile, Trump is actively campaigning in various swing states, including a rally scheduled for Thursday in Saginaw, Michigan.
